This primer was created to accompany the Radiohead FAQ. When the alt.music.radiohead and mailing list FAQs were merged it was perceived that there was a need to deal with the issues relating *directly* to each medium, rather than Radiohead themselves. The FAQ can therefore be considered as being in two parts. The first being the primer, which is unique to each group, and the FAQ "proper" which is common to both. 0.2. Contacting the Editor. This file is maintained by Paul Hopwood [paul@hopwood.org.uk]. Suggestions, comments, additions, deletions or amendments should be sent to [editor@radioheadfaq.co.uk]. 0.3. About the Mailing List. 0.3.1. How do I subscribe and unsubscribe? To subscribe to the unmoderated list, send e-mail to majordomo@lists.underworld.net with "subscribe radiohead" in the body of the message. To unsubscribe, send another message to majordomo@lists.underworld.net with the following in the message body: unsubscribe radiohead To subscribe to the moderated RH news list comprising "only useful information, such as upcoming gigs and other news", send a message to majordomo@lists.underworld.net with "subscribe radiohead-announce" in the message body. To unsubscribe, send another message to majordomo@lists.underworld.net with the following in the message body: "unsubscribe radiohead-announce" 0.3.2. Is there a digest of the list? An digest of the unmoderated list is available. ALL posts go to the same address - radiohead@lists.underworld.net - as with the other version. To receive the digest send e-mail to majordomo@lists.underworld.net with "subscribe radiohead-digest" in the body of the message. And to leave the digest: "unsubscribe radiohead-digest" . 0.4. Posting Guidelines. 0.4.1. Why is there so much off-topic posting? What can I do about it? Because some people want there to be. If you want to do something about it - you have four options: - Unsubscribe (see above) - Flame the list - This never solves anything and invariably starts a flame war, which inflates the level of spam on the list even further. In other words, it's futile. BTW, most people cannot distinguish constructive suggestions from flames, so don't think that being polite will get you any leniency. - Flame individual list members - This may get your rocks off but it seldom has any more effect than flaming the list. It is preferable to flaming the list only in that everybody else doesn't get to read it and then toss in their own two cents' worth of flame. - Get some mail-filtering software. There are several freeware mail clients that can automatically delete mail from certain senders, or that contain certain keywords. Pegasus Mail is one of the more popular packages; it can be found at: http://www.pegasus.usa.com/ The traffic level of the unmoderated Radiohead mailing list is very high, often 50+ messages a day. People on commercial services must pay for the time spent downloading and/or reading these messages; people who do real work in addition to recreation via e-mail must sort through the messages, which costs them time and money anyway. These people tend to get testy when you waste their time. Either make your message matter to them, or refrain from posting -- if only in the interest of preventing flame wars (see above). Not everyone has as much time to kill as you do. [k.lee -- kql6708@is.nyu.edu] 0.4.2. Hey what's everybody's FAVORITE RADIOHEAD SONG? And what's everyone's FAVORITE RADIOHEAD LYRIC? And what about everyone's LEAST FAVORITE HAIR COLOUR FOR THOM? Or what about... Nobody cares. Don't post a message that takes a public poll. Let me say that again: do NOT post a public poll to the list. Polls inevitably generate about fifty messages, each one line long. If you MUST do a poll, I suggest that you ask everyone to e-mail their votes to YOU personally and then, after some reasonable period of time, post your nicely compiled responses to the list. This sort of poll generates more interest and annoys fewer people, and will (usually) be considered a service to the list rather than a nuisance.
