T A L K I N M A T H S + / - X [A Not Even Remotely Official RADIOHEAD FAQ] Ver 1.0.9. 16-Aug-2004 alt.music.radiohead Primer This is a primer for users of the alt.music.radiohead newsgroup. It contains information relating directly to the use of the newsgroup. For "SPEAK IN MATHS - Radiohead FAQ" please go to: FAQ site/mirrors [text version] http://www.radioheadfaq.co.uk/rhfaq.txt http://www.radiohead.hopwood.org.uk/rhfaq.txt FAQ site/mirrors [HTML version] http://www.radioheadfaq.co.uk/rhfaq.htm http://www.radiohead.hopwood.org.uk/rhfaq.htm Incorporating: Radiohead Mailing List FAQ alt.music.radiohead FAQ [--------------------------------------------------------------------] 0.1. About this Primer. 0.2. Contacting the Editors. 0.3. About the newsgroup. 0.4. Posting Guidelines. 0.5. Acronyms. 0.6. The official website. [--------------------------------------------------------------------] 0.1. About this Primer. This primer was created to accompany the Radiohead FAQ. When the alt.music.radiohead and mailing list FAQs were merged it was perceived that there was a need to deal with the issues relating *directly* to each medium, rather than Radiohead themselves. The FAQ can therefore be considered as being in two parts. The first being the primer, which is unique to each group, and the FAQ "proper" which is common to both. 0.2. Contacting the Editor. This file is maintained by Paul Hopwood [paul@hopwood.org.uk]. Suggestions, comments, additions, deletions or amendments should be sent to [editor@radioheadfaq.co.uk]. 0.3. About the newsgroup. Most Internet Service Providers provide access to usenet. You can either access the group using the web-based browser at Google Groups (http://groups.google.com) or use a "proper" offline news reader (recommended!). There are many competent news readers available - Microsoft Outlook Express is NOT one. It is beyond the scope of this resource to make recommendations. Read the documentation provided with your particular news reader to learn how to use it to read and post articles. You will need to find out the names of your ISPs news server. If you cannot find the address or alt.music.radiohead is unavailable contact your ISP for assistance. 0.4. Posting Guidelines. - Read a FAQ on netiquette and usenet before posting. You should have read one before subscribing to the group. You should have read one before getting online. There is no excuse for ignorance in the middle of an information superhighway. Read the information on netiquette found at http://w3.arl.mil/home/netiquette/rfc18551.html - If you need to test your ability to post, do it on alt.test, not on alt.music.radiohead. - Quote. Quote. Quote. If in doubt, Quote. If people can't tell what you are replying to, they will become agitated and prone to flame you. Don't quote an entire post, just to respond with one line. Quote only the relevant part of the post. That is, the part of the post that you wish to comment on. If you do not know how to quote, read the manual or on-line help that came with your particular Internet software package. - If you are on WebTV, you cannot quote. Either copy and paste the relevant parts of the message you are replying to, be *very* explicit, or buy a computer. - Do NOT post in HTML. If you're a user of WebTV, again, take special care when you post. - A.m.r is NOT a binary newsgroup. Do *not* post binary files. No pictures, sound files, or (God forbid) video clips. Post binary files to a misc. binaries group, or put them on a webpage and advertise them in the newsgroup (once will be sufficient). If you don't have a website, you can get a free site from geocities, see www.geocities.com for details, and any number of other similar services. - Don't post in ALL CAPITALS. That indicates shouting. - A.m.r is NOT an advertising forum. While using a.m.r. to trade goods such as tapes, vinyl, CDs, t-shirts, posters, memorabilia and items directly related to the group Radiohead is tolerated and, by many, actively encouraged, posting "for sale" ads for other items, whether music related or not, is generally considered to be "spamming" and annoys people. - Unless they're both topical and highly amusing, trolls are frowned upon. Don't ask stupid questions, or make bogus statements, merely for the response. See a psychologist, or enrol in your country's armed forces. - Try to avoid starting or getting into "My x is better than your x" type arguments, where "x" can be your country, computer, other artists you happen like or indeed anything else. Such debates are purely subjective, utterly pointless and achieve nothing other than filling the newsgroup with irrelevant opinionated crap. While you have every right to your opinion, and you might be convinced you're absolutely correct, we're not interested in hearing about it. - You should not post, unless your post directly concerns Radiohead. Slight deviations will be acceptable. If you're starting a thread that you *know* is going to be slightly off-topic, it helps to add 'OT' (Off-Topic) or '*TAN*' to the subject header, indicating that your post may digress. *TAN*, as in TANgent. Digitiser, anyone? - Use common sense. It goes a long way. You know what's stupid, and what isn't, don't you? Really, you do. 0.5. Acronyms. ACPG - Anyone Can Play Guitar AMR - alt.music.radiohead B.Co - Banana Co. FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions HAND - Have A Nice Day HTH - Hope This Helps KC - Killer Cars LD - Let Down MIL - My Iron Lung MITA - Meeting in the Aisle MPS - Motion Picture Soundtrack NS - No Surprises OKC - O.K. Computer PA - Paranoid Android PAl - Palo Alto PH - Pablo Honey PPL - People PT - Planet Telex RTDF - Read the Damn FAQ RTFF - Figure it out yourself... SHA - Subterranean Homesick Alien SS(FO) - Street Spirit (Fade Out) TB - The Bends TSH - Talk Show Host YHBT - You Have Been Trolled DTMWKODTH - It's a secret. Despite the above acronyms, persons abbreviating 'Probably' to 'Prolly' will be executed, with extreme prejudice. 0.6. The Official Website. Uptight, the official alt.music.radiohead website, sank without trace sometime in 1999. At the moment the newsgroup is siteless. Any volunteers?
